What happens when you pump a septic tank?

We find and open the tank, vacuum out the liquid, sludge and floating scum into the truck, and break up the heavy buildup so it comes out too.

While the tank is open we look at the inlet and outlet baffles, the walls, and the liquid level. If something's off, you'll hear about it before we leave, along with what it would take to fix.

How do I know my tank needs pumping?

Slow drains, gurgling, sewage smells or a soggy drain field usually mean the tank is too full.

  • Toilets and sinks draining slowly all over the house, not just one fixture
  • Gurgling sounds in the pipes after you flush or run water
  • A sewage smell near the tank, the drain field or inside
  • Wet, spongy or extra-green grass over the drain field
  • It's been more than a few years and you can't remember the last pump

Sewage coming up into a tub or floor drain is an emergency. Here's what to do.

How much does septic pumping cost?

It depends on the tank size, how easy the lids are to reach, and how long since the last pump.

“I had this company come pump a home septic tank and power snake a line for my elderly grandparents, they were very punctual, reasonable priced and great to work with! They were able to get my grandparents back up and running in no time, the driver was fantastic and explained the process and was incredibly helpful about making sure we were taken care of.”

FAQ

Septic pumping FAQ

Don't see your question? Call (541) 648-7114 and ask a real person.

How often should a septic tank be pumped?

Most household tanks need pumping every few years. A small tank with a big family may need it every year or two; a large tank with one or two people can go much longer. Use the estimator on this page for a number based on your tank and household.

What's the difference between septic pumping and septic cleaning?

Pumping removes the liquid, sludge and scum from the tank. Cleaning goes a step further: we break up and rinse down the hardened sludge and buildup on the walls and bottom so more of it comes out. We'll tell you which your tank needs when we open it.

Do I need to be home when you pump the tank?

Not always. If we can reach the lids and you've told us where the tank is, we can usually do the job and call you with what we found. If the lids are buried or hard to find, it helps to have someone there.

Should I add bacteria or additives between pumpings?

A healthy tank already has the bacteria it needs. Additives don't replace pumping. What helps most is keeping grease, wipes and harsh chemicals out of the drains.

Can you pump a septic tank in winter?

Yes. Central Oregon winters can bury lids under snow and freeze the ground, so it helps to mark where the lids are before the first snow. If we have to dig through frozen ground, we'll tell you before we start.
